TLC recommends you get a professional to inspect your boiler prior to each winter to perform regular maintenance on your boiler system. Here are some things you should know about your boiler.
Get A Boiler Inspection
It is always a good idea to get your boiler inspected and started up by a professional prior to each winter. A professional will thoroughly inspect the system which may help you avoid hot & cold spots and possibly prevent any leaks in the radiant heat system.
Reduce Hard Water Build-Up
If you have hard water you should invest in a water softener to keep your boiler from developing mineral build-up which decreases the efficiency of the boiler.
Upgrade Your Boiler
Just like furnaces, boilers continue to become more energy efficient over the years. TLC technicians stay current on all the latest boiler upgrades & technology.
Types of Boilers we Install
Many people assume that a hot water heater and a boiler are one and the same. They both heat water, right? Yes, they both heat water but they are very different and used in different ways.
Residential boilers are used to heat a home, most commonly for radiant heat systems. A boiler doesn’t just heat water, it boils it. There are three main types of boiler systems typically used in homes throughout Albuquerque & Santa Fe. TLC’s boiler experts are qualified to repair and replace all makes and models of residential boilers:
This is a basic standard boiler. They operate without condensing the fuel gases inside a pressure vessel. Non-condensing boilers cost less than condensing boilers but have a limited heating capacity and usually have an energy rating of around 80% AFUE.
A condensing hot water boiler heats homes and conserves energy, that in other types of boilers, would escape out the chimney. When the boiler burns gas to produce water vapor, the vapor condenses into a liquid again, releasing latent heat, which boosts efficiency ratings as high as 98%.
Hot Water/Boiler Combination Unit
A high-efficiency combination unit that provides domestic hot water and heating for your home through your radiant floor heating system. These systems must have the power (BTUs) to adequately provide hot water for the home and enough BTUs for the radiant heat system.
COMBINATION BOILER & HEATING SYSTEM
WHAT IS A COMBINATION BOILER SYSTEM?
High-efficiency condensing “combi”, or combination boilers, are very popular in homes today because they can save space and money. A combi boiler is a compact and efficient unit that provides all the heat and hot water a small home needs while saving on operating and installation costs. Combis work like both central heating boilers and hot water cylinders. There are now compact units that can be hung from your kitchen wall.
HOW DO COMBINATION BOILERS WORK?
Unlike conventional systems, combi boilers do not store domestic hot water. They heat water from the cold water directly even as you use them. With the new combi boilers, you do not have a hot water cylinder, loft tank, or pipework. Combis are like standard unvented boilers but they have a second heating circuit, which is what gives you instant hot water when you need it. If fed directly from the main water supply to the heat exchanger, the combi boiler can have an unlimited hot water supply as long as the boiler is firing. Combi units manage to extract a larger amount of heat from the flue gases that escape from the flue system, which increases the combi’s efficiency.

Winter Boiler & Radiant Heat Start-Up
Getting your boiler ready for winter is vital to ensure your comfort when the temperature drops. We always recommend having an HVAC professional familiar with boiler systems to inspect your boiler prior to each winter. Steps for startup are as follows below:
1 Prior to turning on the boiler ensure that the pressure gauge on it is set to 10 to 12 PSI.
2 Make sure the gas is on and the pilot is lit.
3 Check the expansion tank and make sure it is not full of water. If you tap on the tank and it doesn’t sound like an empty tin can, then it likely has water in it and will need to be replaced prior to starting up the boiler.
A Licensed Professional needs to replace and expansion tank. Do not attempt to replace on your own.
4 Plug the boiler in and turn up the thermostat, the boiler should start running. If it doesn’t call a professional.
5 If the boiler makes any odd noise or you can hear water running through the boiler, unplug it and call a professional.
6 Make sure you have carbon monoxide detectors. If they are hard-wired, test them or replace the batteries. Every home should have more than one. A professional will have a highly sensitive C0 detector that can accurately identify CO if you’re concerned about the levels in your home.
